for the St. Louis Blues , and teammate Oskar Sundqvist got even with the Washington Capitals.Alex Ovechkin scored his 30th goal of the season but the Blues came back to beat the Capitals 5-2 on Thursday night after Sundqvist knocked in the go-ahead goal.Ovechkin’s first-period score snapped a six-game drought and tied him with Mike Gartner as the only players in NHL history to begin their careers with 14 straight 30-goal seasons. Gartner scored 30 or more in his first 15 seasons for Washington, the Minnesota North Stars, the New York Rangers and Toronto from 1979-94.“He’s just an elite, elite scorer that we’re so fortunate to have on our team and, jeez, the league is even fortunate just to have this type of a player that’s a generational talent,” Capitals coach Todd Reirden said. “To score 30 again this year is quite an accomplishment after going through a long season last year, and he continues to get a year older but he still does the phenomenal things.”Ovechkin wasn’t in a reflective mood following the loss.“It’s nice to be in that company (with Gartner) but still a long way to go (in my career),” he said.Sundqvist’s goal stood as the game-winner. Sundqvist missed the first eight games of the season with head and shoulder issues after a hit from Washington’s Tom Wilson in a preseason game on Sept. 30.Wilson ended up being suspended 14 games. Bortuzzo and Wilson got into a fight early in the second period.“I don’t know whether he expected it or not Colorado Avalanche T-Shirts Authentic ,” Bortuzzo said. “I think he would have done the same thing on his side and I’m sure a lot of guys would have stepped up in this locker room. I just happened to be the guy and it is what it is.”Alex Pietrangelo had a goal and an assist for the Blues, who stopped a two-game skid. Colton Parayko, Robert Thomas and Tyler Bozak also scored, and Jake Allen made 23 saves.Brett Connolly scored for the Capitals, who had won five road games in a row. Braden Holtby had 37 saves but lost to St. Louis for the first time in his career (7-1-0).Parayko’s power-play goal tied it at 2 with 7:37 left in the second period. That ended an 0-for-21 slump with the man advantage on home ice for the Blues spanning seven games.“We just outworked them, especially in the offensive zone,” Pietrangelo said. “The penalty kill was good. The power play was good in the second period there. I think we simplified and started getting shots and all of sudden momentum started to change.”Sundqvist gave St. Louis a 3-2 lead with a diving sweep of a rebound off Pietrangelo’s shot from the point with 3:27 remaining in the second.“He got the shot through and I saw the puck and the diving during the shot was more to be sure I would be first to the puck,” Sundqvist said.Pietrangelo and Bozak added insurance goals in the third.Thomas deflected Bortuzzo’s slap shot past Holtby at the four-minute mark of the first to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. After Ovechkin tied it, Connolly gave the Capitals a 2-1 advantage three minutes into the second Colorado Avalanche Hoodies Authentic , poking a rebound of his own shot past Allen.NOTES: Blues RW Vladimir Tarasenko (illness) did not play. … Capitals C Evgeny Kuznetsov is one point shy of 300 for his career. … The Blues acquired G Jared Coreau from the Anaheim Ducks for future considerations. ST. LOUIS (AP) — One year ago, Robert Thomas was starring in Buffalo for Team Canada in the IIHF World Junior Championship. Now, he is showcasing his skills against Buffalo for much higher stakes.Thomas had a goal and an assist and Jake Allen made 30 saves to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 4-1 victory over the Sabres on Thursday night.“It kind of feels like it’s been a whole whirlwind and now I ended up here,” Thomas said.“It’s just a dream come true.”Jay Bouwmeester, Pat Maroon and Ryan O’Reilly scored for the Blues.Jack Eichel scored his 15th goal of the season in the second period for the Sabres.Thomas scored his third goal of the season by swatting the rebound of a shot by Vince Dunn underneath Carter Hutton, who inadvertently knocked it into his net with his elbow.“I know I kind of whacked it underneath him,” Thomas said. “I just heard the ref yell goal and I kind of put my hands up.”Hutton stopped 28 of 32 shots in his first appearance against St. Louis after spending the previous two seasons with the Blues. He lost his third consecutive start and fell to 13-11-2 on the season and 0-3-3 against his former teammates.“Obviously, I think I have to be better,” Hutton said.“It’s one of those things. I think I’m real close and playing well Colorado Avalanche Hats Authentic , but four is just unacceptable.”Allen improved to 13-10-4. He has won five of his last seven starts and improved to 6-1-0 against Buffalo.“He’s giving us a chance to win every night,” Blues interim coach Craig Berube said about his starting goaltender. “He’s aggressive. He’s challenging. He’s confident right now and we’re playing good in front of him, too.”Bouwmeester pushed the lead to 2-0 10:01 into the second period. He one-timed a feed from David Perron and scored his first goal since Feb. 13, 2018, at Nashville.Maroon added some insurance when he backhanded a pass from Thomas past Hutton while positioned behind the goal line. It was his third goal of the season.O’Reilly put the game out of reach when he scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season late in the third period. O’Reilly was making his first appearance against Buffalo since the Sabres traded him to St. Louis during the offseason. He had played three seasons and 224 games with Buffalo.“It’s a big game for us in general, coming off the break and trying to get back into the hunt here,” O’Reilly said. “It’s a big game, especially against a team like that being traded from, it always means a bit more. It feels really good to win that one.”Eichel scored on the power play 17:25 into the second period. The goal was Eichel’s 10th in 10 games and the first of his career against the Blues. Montreal and Florida are the only two teams Eichel has not scored against.Buffalo traveled to St. Louis the morning of the game because of the NHL’s holiday break from Dec. 24-26.“Obviously Custom Colorado Avalanche Jerseys , it’s not an easy day for us in terms of traveling, getting here, and the schedule,” Eichel said. “But I think that as a group we probably should’ve been a little more mature about the situation and just given ourselves a better chance to win.”NOTES: St. Louis LW Robby Fabbri missed his 10th consecutive game with an upper body injury. for the New York Rangers‘ David Quinn to get his first win as an NHL coach Jonathan Huberdeau Jersey , and when it finally happened, his team presented him with the puck to mark the achievement. There may not be any celebratory pucks for getting the second win, but Quinn and the Rangers hope they do not have a long wait for the next victory. The Rangers get a chance to follow up their first win of the season Saturday afternoon when they host the Edmonton Oilers.Article continues below ...New York hired Quinn from Boston University to oversee its first rebuilding attempt after missing the playoffs last season for only the second time in 13 seasons since the infamous 2004-05 lockout. Quinn replaced Alain Vigneault, who coached a mostly veteran team for the previous five seasons. The Rangers expected some growing pains but did not think it would take four games to get the first win. They nearly did not get it Thursday against the San Jose Sharks, but defenseman Brendan Smith scored the tying goal with 2:39 remaining in regulation and fellow blue-liner Brady Skjei scored 37 seconds into overtime to turn a potential one-goal loss into a 3-2 victory. Those goals came on a night when Henrik Lundqvist withstood a barrage of shots at times and notched his 432nd career win while turning in a 41-save performance.“The players made me do that (realize this was the first win) when they brought me in the locker room and gave me the puck, so that was pretty special,” Quinn said. “I wish I could divide the puck into about 45 pieces because it was certainly a great win for us. We needed to feel good about something and obviously, Hank (Lundqvist) stood tall for two periods. He gave us a chance tonight for sure.”Rookie Brett Howden scored the other goal for New York and also forced the turnover by the Sharks’ Erik Karlsson that led to the game-winner.Quinn’s first win marked the first time a Rangers defensemen scored the tying goal in regulation and the overtime winner since March 24, 2014, vs. the Arizona Coyotes when Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh did it. It also came on a night when the Rangers consistently allowed odd-man rushes through 40 minutes, including one on San Jose’s second goal.“We kept getting behind them and establishing the offensive zone and not forcing plays,” Quinn said. “That’s been a problem for us. The first three games of the season, our problem is we create our own problems by forcing plays. I thought the third period we started doing things we’re going to have to do to have success.”The defense gave up those rushes while Kevin Shattenkirk sat out as a healthy scratch. The benching was a one-game thing as Shattenkirk is expected to return Saturday after accumulating a minus-4 rating in the first three games. While the Rangers avoided their first 0-4 start since the 1998-99 season, the Oilers remained the league’s only team without a point. The Oilers began the season with a 5-2 loss to New Jersey last Saturday in Sweden and then dropped a 4-1 decision to the Boston Bruins Thursday.Connor McDavid scored the first goal 3:43 into the game against the Bruins, but the Oilers allowed consecutive power-play goals and three in the first period. McDavid has been involved in Edmonton’s first three goals of the season , and although it is two games in there are concerns about others not being able to get prime scoring chances.“The Grade A chances are only coming from three or four individuals, and it has to get an awful lot deeper than that for us to have offensive success,” Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. “That can come from the blue line or wingers on different lines. That could come from the blue line. It seems when we get a little more desperate or fall behind, we find a player or two offensively, but we need them early in the game as well.”McLellan’s call for offense early on is correct as the Oilers try to avoid their third 0-3 start in the last five seasons. The Oilers allowed four goals in the first period in their first two games combined and have led for a total of 5:37 so far.“Any team that can get off to a good start puts themselves in a good position,” McLellan said. “We’re 0-2 right now, we’re not happy about that but we’ve got to keep pushing and we’ll have a big game Saturday against the Rangers.”The Rangers are on a five-game winning streak against the Oilers since taking a 7-5 loss Dec. 11, 2015, in Edmonton. It is New York’s longest win streak against Edmonton in team history. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes are bringing the Lambeau Leap to their hockey rink.Their post-victory parties have gone viral : After each win on home ice, they’ve skated en masse down the ice and jumped into the glass.Consider it the latest sign that this isn’t the same team that has missed the playoffs an NHL-worst nine straight years.“Instead of the standard, everybody goes to center ice and holds their stick up, we’re trying something new,” veteran winger Jordan Martinook said. “I think we had fun with it, and I think the fans liked it Womens Authentic Nick Bjugstad Jersey , so just keep an eye out on those. We might change it up, stick with that one, who knows?”They call it the “Storm Surge,” and they’ve already done it twice to rave reviews from the fans who stuck around after the final horn.It debuted following Carolina’s 8-5 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday night. After the buzzer sounded, the team lined up along one blue line and clapped their hands over their heads while DJ Khaled’s “All I Do is Win” played over the arena’s sound system. Then they skated the length of the ice, with each player taking a playful leap into the boards as the fans cheered. Video of the celebration caught fire on social media seemingly as quickly as the players bounced off the Plexiglas. The encore came Tuesday night after beating Vancouver 5-3, but this time, as his teammates lined up, Micheal Ferland skated to center ice and led the claps before everyone skated down the ice and jumped into the glass.“We looked at it, and they’re fine-tuning it,” first-year coach Rod Brind’Amour said, adding that Ferland “had a little issue with the beat. But again, that’s something that they’ve created, and hopefully they enjoy it and the fans enjoy it.”New captain Justin Williams was the one who came up with the idea, Martinook said.“Once he mentioned it Roberto Luongo Jersey , everyone was pretty excited and ready to run with it,” Martinook said. They know the celebration needs some fine tuning, and the best way to get it right it is by continuing to win — and to have a good reason to do it again.“I think we’ve got to get our tempo better and in sync,” rookie forward Warren Foegele deadpanned. So far during the young season, they certainly have been in sync on the ice. They’re only a week in, but they entered Wednesday night’s games with an Eastern Conference-best seven points.Their 3-0-1 record is the franchise’s best since it relocated from Hartford to North Carolina in 1997, and the last time they opened a season by earning points in four straight games was in 1994 — when they started 4-0-1 and were still known as the Whalers.During their current three-game winning streak, they’ve outscored their opponents by a combined 16-9.For a team with a young core — key players Sebastian Aho, Martin Necas and Andrei Svechnikov were all born after the Whalers skated for the final time in Hartford — they’re determined to keep the focus on having fun and not on the pressure of trying to snap the NHL’s longest postseason drought.“It’s fun, right?” Foegele said. “High-scoring games, a bunch of young guys in here keeping it young, too. The group’s been good, and that’s what you want to see.”

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Nick Bjugstad and Jared McCann from the Florida Panthers on Friday for forwards Derick Brassard and Riley Sheahan and three 2019 draft picks. The deal gives the Penguins an influx of youth in the 26-year-old Bjugstad and the 22-year-old McCann as they make another playoff push. The Panthers , meanwhile, get some salary-cap flexibility and two expiring contracts that could help at the trade deadline.“We think we’ve got two very good players,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. “We’re really excited about these guys and we think they’re going to make us a better team.”Bjugstad has five goals and seven assists in 32 games for the Panthers this season while McCann has eight goals and 10 assists in 46 games with Florida. Bjugstad is signed through 2021 and carries a contract with an average value of $4.1 million. McCann’s deal is through 2020 and pays him an average of $1.25 million per season.Panthers general manager Dale Tallon said it was difficult to part with Bjugstad and McCann.“You’ve got to put the personal feelings aside and do what’s right for the franchise,” Tallon said. “It’s hard to do sometimes, but necessary.”This marks the end of Pittsburgh’s experiment in attempting to make 31-year-old Brassard the team’s third-line center.“To (Brassard’s) defense, he was asked to play a role that’s different than he’s played in his career,” Sullivan said. “Him and I have had a lot of conversations over the last year or so on trying to help him establish his game in the role we’re trying to cast him in. I think our expectations were so high of him because we value how good of a player he is.”Acquired in a deal with Ottawa last season, Brassard struggled to generate much offense during his brief time with the Penguins, collecting just 12 goals in 64 games with Pittsburgh.“Sometimes that happens for whatever reason,” Sullivan said. “I still have so much respect for (Brassard) and the person and player that he is. It’s unfortunate that it didn’t work the way we had all hoped.”The 27-year-old Sheahan, brought over in a trade with Detroit early in the 2017-18 season, had 18 goals and 23 assists in 122 games with the Penguins. Brassard and Sheahan both have expiring contracts, and the Panthers — who are trying to get back into the Eastern Conference playoff hunt — may move them again before the Feb. 25 trading deadline.“We’ll go game-by-game and week-by-week and then we’ll decide before the deadline what we’re going to do,” Tallon said.Pittsburgh also sent a second-round pick and two fourth-round picks in the 2019 draft to Panthers to complete the deal. Also on Friday Richard Panik Jersey , Sullivan announced forward Evgeni Malkin would miss the next two games with an upper-body injury. Malkin, who had two assists in a win Wednesday against Tampa Bay, has five goals in his last 29 games.“I’m disappointed for him because he had a great game (Wednesday),” Sullivan said. “We think that was a game he could really build on, but we’re hopeful this is a short-term thing. Certainly the fact that he had a strong game as he did the other night is encouraging, and we’re looking forward to getting him back in our lineup.” BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) The Buffalo Bills were so dull during their lean years, comedian Nick Bakay feared his body would fuse to the couch while watching them play.”It’s an incredibly disturbing image,” Bakay said of wasting away Sundays witnessing his hometown team sleepwalk through one loss after another during a 17-season playoff drought that ended last year.”I never missed a Bills game. But I was always slumped on my couch. I was never sitting forward. I was never jumping to my feet,” said Bakay, who wrote ”Paul Blart: Mall Cop” and its sequel, and produced and appeared on the TV sitcom ”King of Queens.” ”You sit on your couch, and your couch slowly eats you.”No different for fans of Buffalo’s other pro sports franchise, the NHL’s Sabres Womens Shane Doan Jersey , who finished last for the third time in five years and extended their franchise-worst playoff drought to a seventh season. In a shot-and-a-beer town where the winters are interminably long, Buffalo sports fans ride things out on the notion of renewal always being just around the corner. And there’s a new, palpable optimism for this hearty fan base, thanks to a three-day stretch which showed potential to alter the trajectory of both teams.First, the Bills made a pair of splashes in the first round of the NFL draft on April 26 by trading up to select Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen and Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. Two days later, the Sabres won the NHL draft lottery – something Buffalo lost the previous two times it finished last – and the opportunity to select projected No. 1 pick, Swedish defenseman Rasmus Dahlin.During the NFL draft, CBS Evening News anchor Jeff Glor got dirty looks from his wife during a rare dinner date sneaking peeks at the Bills’ picks. He then yelped with excitement upon learning the Sabres won the lottery while attending the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington.”I had just resigned myself to never winning it,” Glor said. ”But listen, I always have hope.”In Buffalo, there’s a fine line between affection and affliction for hope.”I always try to keep it in check a little bit,” said Glor, who grew up in the Buffalo suburb of Tonawanda.”Unfortunately, you get conditioned to where there are times you can be defeatist. And you try not to be. But you just don’t give up.”Fans have little choice but to persevere in a place where nickname-worthy moments are tied to losses. For the Bills Anders Bjork Jersey , it’s ”Wide Right,” after kicker Scott Norwood missed a last-second field-goal attempt in a 20-19 loss to the New York Giants in the 1991 Super Bowl – the first of four consecutive Super Bowl losses. For the Sabres, it’s ”No Goal,” following a 2-1, triple-overtime loss to Dallas in Game 6 of the 1999 Stanley Cup Final. Brett Hull’s Cup-clinching goal stood even though replays showed his skate in the crease. Those were the so-called glory days. The Bills and Sabres have won five playoff games combined since 2008. By comparison, the NHL’s expansion Vegas Golden Knights have already won eight in their first year of existence.Buffalo joins Nashville, Tennessee, and Charlotte, North Carolina, as the only North American markets with two or more major pro teams to not have won a title.”I think it builds character in a way. I joke with my friends that one day my kids will have to go through therapy because we are Sabres, Bills and Mets fans,” said former VH1-cable TV chief Tom Calderone, who’s from Long Island, New York Bobby Orr Jersey , but got his broadcasting start in Buffalo and maintains a home in the city. ”It’s easy to be a Cowboys fan or a Patriots fan. But it takes true dedication to be a Bills or Sabres fan.”Calderone sees more hope reflected in signs of resurgence for the city itself. The former site of the Erie Canal has been transformed from vacant gravel lots to parkland, a water park that doubles as an ice rink in winter, and an entertainment/hockey complex built by Bills and Sabres owner Terry Pegula.Housing prices have tripled and a medical corridor is newly bustling along Main Street, where shuttered and boarded-up buildings have been renovated or replaced by new steel and glass structures.Buffalo still has its rust-belt blemishes as one of the nation’s poorest cities. Racial inequities, failing schools and a crumbling infrastructure remain issues. The Bills and Sabres aren’t immune to troubling headlines. Last week, the two teams’ president Russ Brandon resigned amid allegations of having inappropriate relationships with female employees.Buffalo might never regain the industrial-age prominence it held in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the city became a Great Lakes shipping hub as the gateway to the Erie Canal.Nor, however, should it become the punchline comedian Jon Stewart once delivered during a stop in Buffalo, calling the city the gateway to the Ontario border town of Fort Erie just across the Niagara River – population 30,000.Watching a documentary on former Bills running back O.J. Simpson, Bakay was reminded of the gloomy times in the 1970s when the steel mills began closing and legions of people left to find jobs.”It depressed me so much,” he said. ”Every shot of Buffalo looked like a moose that farted into the sky.”The decline led to Buffalo investing its psyche into its sports teams as a way of remaining part of the national conversation.”Our teams were the only way we could punch back and say, `Yeah , we’re here,”’ Bakay said.Allen and the prospect of adding Dahlin have recaptured his imagination as to what’s possible.”It’s like all of a sudden we’ve got go-big-or-go-home-talent coming our way,” Bakay said.He recalled how the Bills once pinned their hopes on quarterback Trent Edwards, who earned the nickname ”Captain Checkdown” for being overly cautious.”After years of the Trent Edwards of the world, we get a kid who has that kind of talent,” Bakay said.Maybe, he’ll finally be able to get off that couch.”I don’t think we need any kind of help of, `Can we believe?’ We can believe in a bag of doughnuts,” Bakay said. ”But that weekend was like, `Oh my god. Things are really happening. Pinch me.”’—This story has been corrected to note Tom Calderone is from Long Island, New York.

NEW YORK (AP) — winning this season.Against the New York Rangers on Monday night , a late goal and a shot in overtime that clanged off the post helped secure a needed victory.Tyler Toffoli scored 25 seconds into overtime as the Kings rallied to beat the Rangers 4-3.Toffoli’s ninth goal of the season came moments after the Rangers’ Mika Zibanejad rang the puck off the post behind Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick. Toffoli was mobbed by his teammates as Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist skated away in disgust.“We were in it the whole game and we found a way to come back,” Toffoli said. “I think it was overdue for us. We are really happy with this win.”Adrian Kempe, who assisted on the overtime winner, scored twice and Anze Kopitar added a goal for the Kings, who scored in the last minute of regulation and the first minute of 3-on-3 overtime.Toffoli and Michael Amadio assisted on the tying goal off a scramble in front of Lundqvist. Quick finished with 24 saves.“They found a way to tie it,” Rangers defenseman Marc Staal said. “And overtime isn’t real hockey, so anything goes there.”Zibanejad, Chris Kreider and Adam McQuaid scored for the Rangers.Lundqvist, who made 26 saves, was exasperated after yet another excruciating home loss. The Rangers have four overtime defeats at Madison Square Garden this season and two more in shootouts.“That overtime goal sums it up — not only this game but a lot of games,” he said. “It’s just really frustrating. Not getting rewarded two points for this effort, that hurts.”The Kings tied the game at the 19-minute mark of the third on Kempe’s second goal of the game and seventh of the season after Los Angeles had pulled Quick for an extra skater.“You’ve got to play 60 minutes Josh Rosen Jersey Limited ,” Rangers coach David Quinn said. “I thought as the game went on we got more sloppy. You’ve got to finish the job.”McQuaid had put the Rangers ahead 3-2 at 9:15 of the third when his fluttering shot from the point eluded Quick. It was McQuaid’s first goal of the season and his first as a member of the Rangers. The Rangers top line of Kreider, Zibanejad and Mats Zuccarello continued to surge. The trio has 39 points — 18 goals and 21 assists — over their last eight games together.Despite his stellar production lately, Zibanejad was frustrated after a vexing and stunning defeat.“We put ourselves in a great place to win, but we couldn’t close it,” said Zibanejad, who has had multi-point games in four of his last five contests. “It’s just disappointing.”The contest was another close game between the teams. Since Feb. 5, 2008, 17 of 18 meetings between the Rangers and Kings have been decided by two or fewer goals, and 11 have been decided by one goal. The Rangers won this season’s earlier meeting, 4-3 in Los Angeles on Oct. 28.Kreider opened the scoring with his team-leading 24th goal at 8:32 of the first period. The goal came on a crisp cross-ice pass from defenseman Tony DeAngelo, who had been healthy scratch the past two games. Zibanejad also assisted.Kempe tied it for the Kings at 17:23 of the first on a setup by former Ranger Carl Hagelin and former New Jersey Devil Ilya Kovalchuk. It was Kempe’s first goal since Dec. 11.Zibanejad put the Rangers back on top 32 seconds into the second period with his 21st goal. It was his ninth goal in the last seven games, which included his first hat trick as a member of the Rangers on Jan. 31 against the Devils in Newark.Zibanejad has 10 goals and eight assists over in his last 11 games Authentic Julio Jones Jersey , and has a career-high 52 points this season.Zuccarello and Staal assisted on Zibanejad’s goal. That extended Zuccarello’s consecutive games points streak to eight. The Norwegian forward has five goals and nine assists in that stretch.Kopitar tied the game for a second time at 5:04 of the third with his 16th goal of the season. Kovalchuk had the lone assist. The Rangers were coming off a 3-2 loss to the league-leading Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night, while the Kings, who have the fewest points in the Western Conference, were playing the second game of a six-game trip. They lost 4-2 to Islanders on Saturday night. In a season of struggles, Monday night’s victory represented much needed relieffor his squad, Kings coach Willie Desjardins emphasized.“Our guys are excited. The Lightning improved to 9-0-1 in their last 10 games, with six victories coming in overtime or in the shootout.”You have to give credit to the guys. It was the seventh time in the past eight games that the Lightning were tied at the end of regulation. The Canadiens – third-worst in the Eastern Conference with 62 points – gave the Lightning all they could handle, never trailing in the game. Montreal kept in check a Tampa Bay team that had scored three or more goals 14 times in its previous 15 games.”I don’t want to make it sound like I’m OK with losing because I’m not and we’re not,” Montreal coach Claude Julien said, ”but I appreciated the effort this afternoon. I thought our guys played hard and we really pushed.”Artturi Lehkonen put Montreal in front early with a power-play goal on a one-timer after the rebound of Charles Hudon’s shot was blocked and landed right in his path at 4:10 of the opening period. Tyler Johnson responded with his 20th of the season, also on the power play, at 13:43 to tie the game.Alex Galchenyuk put the Canadiens back in front at 3:00 of the second period after Ryan McDonagh, playing his first game with Tampa Bay since being acquired from the New York Rangers on Feb. 26, had his cross-ice pass intercepted by Hudon, which led to a 3-on-1 break the other way.But Montreal was unable to create more separation, failing to convert on a pair of third-period power-play chances.”You have to make sure to capitalize on those chances and get a two-goal lead,” former Lightning winger Jonathan Drouin said. ”Especially when you’re playing a team like that with so much offense and so much power. We just couldn’t get it done.”The Lightning found a spark when J.T. Miller , acquired from the Rangers at the trade deadline, was moved onto the line with Stamkos and Kucherov to start the third period. On the tying goal, Miller forced a turnover behind the net to get the puck to Stamkos.”If you told me a while ago I would have been playing on a line with those two, I would have laughed,” said Miller, who has two goals and six points in six games since the trade. ”It’s a heck of an opportunity. The Canucks had pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker.Mika Zibanejad had given New York a 5-4 lead less than five minutes earlier.Kevin Hayes scored twice for the Rangers (28-30-6), who snapped a seven-game losing streak. Vladislav Namestnikov, obtained in a multi-player trade from Tampa Bay on Monday, had a goal and an assist. Jimmy Vesey had the other New York goal while Ryan Spooner had three assists. Jim Nill could have picked anyone from an extensive list of experienced out-of-work NHL coaches to fill the Dallas Stars‘ vacancy.Darryl Sutter has won the Stanley Cup twice, Dan Bylsma once, Alain Vigneault has made the Final twice and Dave Tippett is widely considered one of the best in hockey. Any of them could’ve been a nice fit , but the Stars general manger wanted to be comprehensive in his search.”The game is changing, life changes, and we wanted to make sure that we didn’t forget somebody,” Nill said. ”Let’s not leave anything, any leaf unturned, every door open, let’s look at every candidate.”Dallas decided last week on University of Denver coach Jim Montgomery to replace franchise legend Ken Hitchcock, who returned for one season almost two decades after leading the Stars to the Cup. Nill’s front office is far from the only one looking outside the box to college, junior and Europe for coaching candidates Womens Samuel Girard Jersey , a trend that could lead to far more teams going beyond retreads with the hope of finding the next great mind behind the bench.”It’s more kind of an evolution of the game itself,” said Philadelphia coach Dave Hakstol, who was hired out of the University of North Dakota in the summer of 2015 and has gotten the Flyers to the playoffs twice in three seasons. ”There are so many good people coaching at different levels. For a lot of years it seems that maybe the college-coaching level was maybe bypassed for some of the opportunities. But I think when you look at the quality of coaching in the college game today … there’s some real talented people.”Before Hakstol and Montgomery, it had been since Herb Brooks in 1987 and Bob Johnson in 1982 that a coach went from the NCAA ranks directly to the NHL. Outside of now-San Jose’s Peter DeBoer and ex-Pittsburgh coach Mike Johnston, junior hockey hasn’t funneled many straight to the NHL, and there have only been two European-born head coaches: Ivan Hlinka and Alpo Suhonen in the early 2000s.It’s far more common for teams to mine the American Hockey League and NHL staffs for head jobs, and that’s usually a necessary step. Tampa Bay’s Jon Cooper came from the United States Hockey League but spent time in the AHL before the Lightning elevated him, and longtime Quebec Major Junior Hockey League coach Benoit Groulx is on the same path now with the NHL in his near future.Buffalo’s Phil Housley got some experience as the U.S. world junior coach but went right from high school hockey to being an assistant in Nashville. And Rod Brind’Amour spent seven seasons as an assistant after his playing days were over before being named Carolina’s coach on Tuesday.Hurricanes GM Don Waddell said Brind’Amour’s ”fresh ideas, ability to motivate and understanding of what it takes to bring a championship” to Carolina set him apart. As the New York Rangers look to fill their job after firing Vigneault and other openings come up in the next few offseasons Semyon Varlamov Jersey , there will be plenty of fresh coaches to choose from.Boston University’s David Quinn has been linked to the Rangers but will stay at least one more year and run the U.S. world junior team before likely being the next to graduate from college to the NHL. Sweden national coach Rikard Gronborg might also be in the mix sooner than later.”I’ve kind of done all that stuff and coached some of the best players in the world,” Gronborg told Sportsnet recently. ”Now I’m interested to have my ideas, to (implement) them over a period of time and do them overseas, and kind of challenging the coaching community over in the NHL. I bring a different perspective on things.”Germany national coach Marco Sturm also brings a different perspective after playing 14 NHL seasons and leading an unheralded team to capture the silver medal at the most recent Olympics. Sturm would like to coach in the NHL but said: ”I’m only 39 years old, I’ve still got time and I’m still learning and I want to learn and we’ll see what the future presents.”With an eye on the future, Nill looked at the present success of young coaches like Cooper and New Jersey’s John Hynes and widened his net. It ended with Montgomery and perhaps a new thought process from Nill on how to go through coaching searches.”Once we went through this process, I just think … who was Scott Bowman? Someone gave him a chance,” Nill said. ”Who was Mike Babcock? Somebody gave him a chance. This is a guy that he deserves a chance.”—AP Sports Writer Stephen Hawkins in Dallas contributed.—

ST. PAUL , Minn. (AP) — was at the end of his shift and tired, but he was on the other side of the ice from the bench when he entered the offensive zone with the puck and time winding down in overtime.Radulov’s decision to stay on the ice instead of going to the bench for a change paid off in a big way for the Dallas Stars. The veteran forward scored with 10 seconds on the clock in overtime to give Dallas a 2-1 win against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night.“It was either change or take that 2-on-1,” Radulov said. “I mean, I should be changing before, but I’ll take that end.”Ben Bishop made 30 saves for the Stars, and Jamie Benn finally beat Minnesota goaltender Devan Dubnyk 1:58 into the third period for his eighth goal in the past 14 games.Dubnyk stopped 25 shots for the Wild, who have lost four in a row and nine of 12. Jason Zucker pushed the game to overtime with his 10th goal of the season with 2:03 left in regulation.“I just looked up at about the 12-second mark and I said, ‘OK, who am I going to put for the shootout?’ Because I figured it was done,” Minnesota coach Bruce Boudreau said. “I mean, Radulov was trying to get off the ice. … When he had the 2-on-1, he couldn’t skate at all coming in there. I don’t know, it’s frustrating.”A frenzied Authentic Jared Goff Jersey , back-and-forth overtime finally turned in Dallas’ favor when Radulov wristed a shot between Dubnyk and the post for his 11th goal. The extra period featured several odd-man rushes. On one sequence, Minnesota’s Zach Parise rang a shot off the post followed by Stars defenseman John Klingberg doing the same at the other end.“That was pretty back and forth, one of the more wild ones I’ve been a part of,” Bishop said. “I’m just glad we came out on the right side of it.”The Stars won for the second time in seven games.Zucker finally ended an offensive slump for the Wild, who have three goals in the last four games. Eric Staal’s shot was stopped and Mikael Granlund tried another one on the backside while falling backward before the puck trickled out to Zucker, who whipped it into an open net.Minnesota was 0 for 3 on the power play against Bishop and is scoreless on its last nine chances with the man advantage since going 4 for 4 on Dec. 11.“It was nice to finally break through and get one,” Zucker said. “Felt like Granny, Staal and I have been fighting it a little bit and battling. So, it was good to get that, and we worked hard tonight, that’s for sure. It definitely wasn’t a lack of effort. Every single guy from Duby on out was working hard. Sometimes it’s just not enough.”The Wild had a four-minute power play after Dallas defenseman Roman Polak started a fight with Minnesota center Luke Kunin. Polak was assessed roughing, instigator and 10-minute misconduct penalties, but the Wild mustered just one shot on the power play.“I give credit to Roman Polak because after his fight Jared Goff Jersey Elite , that four-minute kill … we were desperate, and we carried it off and now we were in the fight,” Stars coach Jim Montgomery said.NOTES: Minnesota D Matt Dumba missed his third game with an upper-body injury and the team announced he will have surgery next week. DETROIT (AP) — The Columbus Blue Jackets were one of the best NHL teams in overtime last year. With a talented player like Artemi Panarin, they may be tough to beat in 3-on-3 hockey again this season.Panarin scored midway through overtime, lifting Columbus to a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night in the opener for both teams.“He doesn’t seem to get tired,” said Cam Atkinson , who scored the Blue Jackets’ first goal. “He’s a game-changer.”Columbus was 9-3 in overtime last season, trailing only Pittsburgh’s rate of success. Detroit, meanwhile, was an NHL-worst 3-12 in overtime in 2017-18.Panarin broke franchise records and set career highs with 55 assists and 82 points last season, his first in Columbus after being acquired in a trade with Chicago. The Russian winger likes to stay on the ice a lot and coach John Tortorella doesn’t have a problem with it.“I’m not going to get in his way because he’s a game-breaker Authentic Brandin Cooks Jersey ,” Tortorella said.Atkinson and Josh Anderson gave Columbus the lead over the first two periods. Rookie Dennis Cholowski and Tyler Bertuzzi pulled the Red Wings into a tie with goals in the second period.Joonas Korpisalo stopped 18 shots for the Blue Jackets. Detroit’s Jimmy Howard made 36 saves, helping the team send the game past regulation.“We got outshot by a lot and we were outplayed territorially, but Jimmy gave us a chance at two points,” Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. “We got one of them, and he was a big part of that.”The rebuilding Red Wings honored Henrik Zetterberg, whose career is over because of a back ailment, before the game. Then, the team put five players on the ice who were playing for the first time in the NHL.Cholowski, Christoffer Ehn, Michael Rasmussen, Filip Hronek and Libor Sulak all made their debut.“With experience and games, they’re only going to get better and better,” Detroit’s Justin Abdelkader said. “With experience and work , they can really grow.”The last time an NHL team had that many rookies playing in their first game together was Detroit in 1985. It has happened just two other times in the league since the 1979, with the Colorado Rockies and Vancouver Canucks in 1981.Columbus is coming off consecutive postseason appearances for the first time in its 17-year history. The Blue Jackets are in win-now mode , aiming to advance in the playoffs for the first time with goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky and Panarin entering the last year of their contracts.Columbus controlled the play and the puck for most of the night, looking like it was on the power play during even-strength situations at times. The Red Wings were down a skater often, putting the Blue Jackets on the power play six times.“We have to stay out of the box,” Blashill said. “We didn’t establish much of a forecheck, but every time we got a little momentum, we took another penalty. “The Blue Jackets enjoyed a big shot advantage for much of the game, but Howard prevented them from converting on a lot of chances to score.“We had full control,” Atkinson said. “We had plenty of opportunities and probably could’ve scored more, but Howard is a great goalie.”UP NEXT:Columbus: Hosts Carolina on Friday with Bobrovsky getting the start in net.Detroit: At Los Angeles on Sunday.

NEW YORK (AP) — Islanders‘ situation in goal.Thomas Greiss and Robin Lehner have formed a pretty solid tandem so far.Greiss made 35 saves for his first shutout of the season , and the Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Saturday night for their fifth straight win.“We feed off that,” forward Josh Bailey said. “When he and Lehner are on, it adds so much confidence to our team.”It was Greiss’ ninth career shutout. Dating to Oct. 28, Greiss has allowed just four goals on 114 shots.“It’s going well and everyone is happy and enjoying hockey right now,” he said.Jordan Eberle, Brock Nelson and Scott Mayfield scored for New York (8-4-1), which improved to 6-0-0 against the Metropolitan Division this season. Bailey had two assists to extend his point streak to eight games.“When you get on these streaks as a team and individually you want to ride them for as long as you can,” Bailey said. “But it’s about staying even keel and not thinking too much about it, and preparing the same way you do every game.”Despite losing for the sixth time in seven games, the Devils (5-5-1) left Barclays Center feeling positive about their performance.“There’s plenty of season left,” said Keith Kinkaid, who had 30 saves. “We’re just going through a little (stretch). Everything is a learning curve.“We have to keep sticking at it.”The Devils came up empty on two early power-play chances before the Islanders grabbed the lead on Eberle’s power-play goal 7:43 into the game. With Jean-Sebastien Dea in the box for hooking Adam Pelech, Eberle tapped in Anders Lee’s rebound for his fourth of the season, and third in New York’s last three games.“I had quite a few chances again Darren Helm Jersey ,” Eberle said. “So you want to try and maintain (the) things you’re having success with.”New Jersey outshot New York 35-33 for the game, but the Islanders were 1 for 4 on the power play and killed all four man advantages for the Devils.“We’d almost take that game than playing (poorly) and winning,” New Jersey star Taylor Hall said. “Sometimes you have to go through (a stretch) during a season and find your game. Find an example of how you need to play night in and night out. And sometimes results are going to come, and sometimes you’re going to play — like I said (poorly) and win. Right now we’ll take the way we played.”Neither team was able develop any traction offensively in a stop-and-start second period, with the best chance being Hall’s semi-breakaway at 8:06 that Greiss knocked away.“We didn’t get any bounces,” New Jersey coach John Hynes said. The third was a mirror image of the second, although New York did generate seven shot attempts in a 52-second span after Lee forced a Hall turnover.Nelson got his team-leading seventh goal of the season with 4:54 left. The sequence began with Nick Leddy blocking a Mirco Mueller shot, leading to a 2-on-1 with Nelson and Bailey.Mayfield’s empty-netter ended the scoring.“I really liked our second and I really liked our third,” New York coach Barry Trotz said. “I really like our mindset.”NOTES: Following New York’s optional skate, Trotz said LW Matt Martin would miss the game with an upper-body injury. DENVER (AP) Colorado had speed and youth. Nashville brought experience and know-how.It was plain to see which won out – this time.Mattias Ekholm ignited the offense early with the first goal by a Nashville defenseman in the series, Pekka Rinne stopped 22 shots and the top-seeded Predators advanced to the second round with a 5-0 victory over the Avalanche in Game 6 on Sunday night.Austin Watson , Filip Forsberg , Nick Bonino and Viktor Arvidsson also scored to help the Predators move on to face Winnipeg. They were 3-1-1 against the Jets in the regular season.”I’m very impressed the way (the Avalanche) played. They played very modern hockey, with a lot of speed ,” said Rinne, who notched his fourth career postseason shutout as the Predators won the series 4-2. ”Great game. Great team effort. We didn’t give them any life.”Nashville removed any sort of drama with two goals in the opening period and two more in the second to hush the capacity crowd. That’s the sort of game plan the Predators envisioned.”I think that was our best game from start to finish,” Watson said. ”That’s good for us going forward, to be able to take the last game of this series and carry that into how we want to play in the next one.”Andrew Hammond ran out of magic in net, allowing five goals. The third-string goaltender nicknamed ”Hamburglar” had 44 saves during a Game 5 win in Nashville to extend the series. But he couldn’t turn back a formidable Nashville offense that won a second straight playoff contest in Denver. Before this, the Avalanche hadn’t lost two straight at the Pepsi Center since early December.”It’s disappointing to us and I’m sure it’s disappointing to fans,” Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog said. ”It means a lot to us that they did give us a standing ovation at the end.”Watson tormented Colorado with four goals and seven points in the series. In all, 11 of Nashville’s forwards had at least a point over six games. The one thing missing was contributions from a blue line that tied a franchise record for goals during the regular season. The Predators `D’ was held scoreless until Ekholm’s slap shot at 7:20.Forsberg scored 38 seconds into second to give Nashville a 3-0 lead and completely drain the energy out of the arena. Bonino added another to go with his two assists. The closest Colorado came to scoring on Rinne was in the second period, when Nikita Zadorov sent in a shot, but it was waved off due to goaltender interference on Carl Soderberg.”Every line that went out there took a lot of pride in playing good defense, even at the end with the game 5-0. We still protected the net,” Rinne said. ”Guys wanted to get me that shutout.”It was quite a bounce-back season for Colorado, which boasts one of the youngest teams in the league. The Avalanche went from a 48-point team in 2016-17 to 95 points this season, earning the last playoff spot on the final day of the regular season. The Avs are the first NHL team to post that sort of turnaround from one full season to the next since Pittsburgh also jumped 47 points in 2005-06 (58) to `06-07 (105).”There are a lot of positives for sure Frans Nielsen Jersey Kids ,” said Nathan MacKinnon, who was held to one shot Sunday. ”Everybody thought we weren’t going to make it, that we were going to be the odd-team-out in the West. Obviously, it’s nice to prove some people wrong and have a good young team going forward.”In the handshake line after the game, Nashville coach Peter Laviolette had some encouraging words for MacKinnon.”He thought our team was up-and-coming, similar to their team,” MacKinnon recounted. ”Definitely, it’s a good team to be compared to.”Colorado ran into a Predators squad that looked every bit like the team that went to the Stanley Cup Final a season ago and won the Presidents’ Trophy this season. They’re clicking on all cylinders heading into the Winnipeg series.”These guys have been flying around for six games, playing really fast hockey,” Forsberg said. ”We’ve been trying to play as fast as we can as well. ANAHEIM , Calif. (AP) both have been regular Stanley Cup playoff participants for the past 15 years, the California rivals somehow met in the postseason only once before this week. That first-round series in 2009 provided valuable lessons to the veterans remaining in both dressing rooms. The eighth-seeded Ducks eliminated the top-seeded Sharks in six tempestuous games culminating in the Ducks’ clinching home victory, which began with Ryan Getzlaf and Joe Thornton dropping the gloves on the opening faceoff.Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Francois Beauchemin are still around in Anaheim, while Thornton, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Joe Pavelski are still in teal. When they drop the puck on another first-round meeting Thursday night at Honda Center, the veterans from both clubs will keep in mind what they’ve learned from many years of the playoff grind.”We would have liked to probably handle that series a little better,” recalled Pavelski, now the Sharks’ captain. ”We were great in the regular season. Just never really got it going. This group understands we want to get off to a good start. If you get that first goal under your belt and play with the lead Vegas Golden Knights T-Shirts Womens , more often than not it puts that other team under a little bit of pressure.”Much has changed for both teams in the ensuing nine years, but this rivalry hasn’t cooled much. Getzlaf and Perry are still seeking their first Stanley Cup since 2007, while the Sharks are still waiting to raise it for the first time. The 38-year-old Thornton is still in teal, but his right knee injury seems likely to keep him out for the first round. Anaheim has its own injury woes headlined by the shoulder problem of top defenseman Cam Fowler, who is expected to miss the series. Here are more things to watch in the eighth playoff series between California teams in NHL history:OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS?: The series opens in Orange County because of a tremendous late-season surge by the Ducks, who won their final five games to slide in front of San Jose for second place in the Pacific Division. Anaheim overcame its early-season injury problems and the late-season absence of goalie John Gibson to finish with 101 points to San Jose’s 100. The Sharks lost five of their final six regular-season games and gave away home-ice advantage on the final day of the regular season. Home ice typically doesn’t mean much in the postseason, but the Ducks have lost in regulation at Honda Center just once in 17 games since Jan. 23.KANE’S CHANCE: Evander Kane provided a big spark for San Jose after being acquired from Buffalo at the trade deadline with nine goals and five assists in 17 games. Kane’s reward for his strong play is his first trip to the playoffs nine seasons into his career. Kane never got a shot at the postseason with Atlanta, Winnipeg or Buffalo, but believes his style of play is conducive to this time of year.”I’ve said it in the past: I think I’m a playoff player Vegas Golden Knights Hoodies Womens ,” he said. ”I’ve watched the playoffs and when I look at the style of play and it’s something I was jealous because I wasn’t involved in it. Now I get that opportunity and I have to back those words up.”SCORING D: Sharks coach Peter DeBoer has put a priority on getting offense from their defense and it paid off this season with San Jose ranking third in the NHL with 199 points from the blue line. The offense didn’t just come from last year’s Norris Trophy winner Brent Burns, with a team record five defensemen in all scoring at least 20 points, including a career-high 33 points from Justin Braun and a career-best 11 goals from Vlasic.”I don’t know what it is. He’s been preaching it for a few years but this year I think we really took hold of it a little bit more,” Braun said.SPECIAL TEAMS: The Sharks power-play has been a bit of a roller coaster this season. San Jose converted just 14.5 percent of its chances with the man advantage over the first 18 games before things started to click. The Sharks scored on 28.9 percent of their chances over the next 29 games before falling back into a rut after Thornton injured his knee. The power play slumped late in the year, converting at a rate of 16.5 percent over the last 35 games. The penalty kill was much more consistent, ranking second in the league at 84.8 percent for the season.—AP Sports Writer Josh Dubow in San Jose contributed to this report.— SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Mikkel Boedker might be playing his best hockey with the Sharks.”Yeah, I think that’s pretty fair to say,” Boedker said after scoring twice in San Jose’s 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Sunday. ”I think it’s going well Vegas Golden Knights Hats Womens , capitalizing on the chances and paying real well. Our line has been very good and we’re fortunate to get a lot of chances, so we got to keep going.”Joe Pavelski, Melker Karlsson and Justin Braun also scored and Martin Jones made 26 saves for the Sharks, who won their fourth in five games.Article continues below ...Gemel Smith and Tyler Pitlick scored for Dallas. Ben Bishop was chased after allowing four goals on five shots, and Kari Lehtonen made 22 saves in relief. The Stars had won six of their previous seven games.”When you look at it, it’s been this way four of the last six games. The goalies have saved us. They didn’t save us tonight,” Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said. ”When you don’t check, when you don’t want to check, against a good team that’s ready to play Custom Vegas Golden Knights Jerseys , you get burned.”The Stars beat the Sharks 6-0 on New Year’s Eve and had won three straight against them entering play Sunday.”We were actually moving this game,” Braun said. ”In Dallas, everyone left their legs somewhere else. Everyone was coming above on the backcheck and shutting down their speed. That was huge.”Pavelski scored 27 seconds into the contest to spark the onslaught. After taking a passfrom Timo Meier, Pavelski backhanded the puck into the net. Karlsson made it 2-0 a little more than five minutes later, taking a rebound off the back boards, he was able to sneak it past Bishop.Boedker scored when his shot was deflected off the stick of Alexander Radulov and past Bishop. Boedker scored again two minutes later with a shot over Bishop’s left shoulder, ending Bishop’s day with 2:37 remaining in the first period.”He’s played some solid hockey at stretches but hasn’t got rewarded,” Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said of Boedker. ”I think he’s combining them now, which is what we need , and we need that to continue.”Braun found a crease through the defense to make it 5-0 five minutes into the second period.”They scored every chance they got,” Stars Dan Hemhuis said. ”Our determination level was not high enough. We have to get our process in order and the results will take care of itself.”Smith scored midway through the third period after taking a smart pass from Brett Richie and tapping it into an open net.Pitlick scored on a rebound in front of the net off a shot from John Klineberg.NOTES: The Sharks recalled F Danny O’Regan with C Tomas Hertl out a second straight game with an injury. … Stars F Martin Hanzal is traveling with the team on their three-game California trip but was scratched from Sunday’s lineup with ”general soreness,” coach Ken Hitchcock said. … Stars C Jason Dickinson was optioned to the Texas Stars (AHL). … Pavelski has nine points over his last six games. … Boedker has scored goals in each of his last three games. … Sharks D Marc-Edouard Vlasic has an assist in each of his past four games.UP NEXT:Stars: At Anaheim on Wednesday night.Sharks: At St. Louis on Tuesday night.

NEW YORK (AP) — GAG Line teammates as the latest to have his number retired by the New York Rangers.A banner with his name and No. 11 was raised to the rafters at Madison Square Garden on Sunday in a ceremony before the Rangers hosted the Winnipeg Jets.Hadfield had 262 goals and 310 assists in 841 games over parts of 13 seasons in New York before he was traded to Pittsburgh in May 1974 and finished his career with the Penguins in 1976. With the Rangers Youth Tyler Pitlick Jersey , he was the left wing on a line with Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert — dubbed the GAG Line for “goal a game.”Hadfield, a Rangers captain from 1971-74, received an ovation from the crowd when he was announced and walked out on the red carpet on the ice, and then again when he was called up to the podium by Gilbert.“I can’t explain how incredible and amazing it is to stand before you and accept this tribute tonight,” the 78-year-lold Hadfield said. “This is such an honor, a privilege for any player.”Hadfield became the 10th player to have his number retired by the Rangers, and his No. 11 — also retired for Mark Messier — is the second to be selected for two players. The other is No. 9, retired for Adam Graves and Andy Bathgate. Ed Giacomin (1), Brian Leetch (2) Tyler Seguin Jersey , Harry Howell (3), Gilbert (7), Ratelle (19) and Mike Richter (35) have also been honored.“A special thank you to Rod and Jean,” Hadfield said. “I certainly wouldn’t be able to be here without you two.”Giacomin, Richter, Messier, Leetch, Graves, Ratelle and Gilbert also attended the ceremony , while Howell and Bathgate were represented by family members. Some of Hadfield’s former teammates were also present, including Ron Greschner, Steve Vickers, Bob Nevin, Bruce MacGregor, Ted Irvine, Bill Fairbarn, Pete Stemkowski,k Walt Tkaczuk Womens Carl Soderberg Jersey , Tim Neilson, Brad Park and 91-year-old former coach Emile Francis. The GAG Line’s big season was in 1971-72 when they finished third, fourth and fifth in the league in points and Hadfield and Ratelle became the first two Rangers to reach 100 points. Hadfield was the first Rangers player to score 50 goals that season, and Ratelle — who suffered an ankle injury late in the season — set a franchise record with 109 points that stood until Jaromir Jagr had 123 in 2005-06.“Our line had great chemistry and we made each other better players,” Ratelle said.Francis added: “I’m so proud all three of their names will be together on the roof.”Hadfield was presented with a specially inscribed commemorative watch, a standard-sized sideboard with names of his 132 teammates during his tenure with the Rangers, and a five-day cruise with his family.Current Rangers players sat on the bench during the ceremony, all wearing No. 11 jerseys with Hadfield’s name on the back. The ceremony for Hadfield was announced on Feb. 28, after Ratelle had his number retired.“I didn’t have a clue Gabriel Landeskog Jersey Kids ,” Hadfield said before Sunday’s ceremony. “When Rod announced it, it was quite a shock, and emotional.” HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (AP) — How’s this for a slap shot to the ego: Sidney Crosby is not getting a road named for him in his home province. It seems one of hockey’s greatest players does not meet the criteria for commemorative naming because he has not yet retired. The Pittsburgh Penguins captain has won three Stanley Cups and two Olympic gold medals. Over the summer he was voted the province’s No. 1 athlete by the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame. But when it comes to changing the name of Dartmouth’s Forest Hills Parkway to Sidney Crosby Parkway a roadblock is now up.A report by Halifax city staff acknowledges the “broad range of positive impacts” of Crosby’s achievements, but renaming the street would conflict with municipal policies.Instead, other tributes are suggested: declaring a “Sidney Crosby Day,” naming a community rink after him or installing a public art project in his honor.

Nashville Predators players stood around the locker room after beating the Washington Capitals 4-3 Custom New Jersey Devils Jerseys , huddled around cellphones watching and rooting for more franchise history.Seconds after the Boston Bruins lost to the Florida Panthers in regulation on Thursday night, Mattias Ekholm yelled out, ”Yeah boys!” as teammates high-fived to celebrate the first Presidents’ Trophy in the team’s 19-year history.A year after the Predators made an improbable run to the Stanley Cup Final as the eighth seed in the Western Conference, they’ve clinched home ice throughout the playoffs as the top team in the NHL during the regular season. The road to the Cup now runs through Nashville.”It’s a pretty good night for us,” captain Roman Josi said. ”Obviously the big goal for every team is to win the Stanley Cup, but you can’t win the Stanley Cup right now. It was something we took a lot of pride in, and I think it’s a big accomplishment for us.”Josi, who scored a power-play goal in the clincher, said he and fellow Predators players looked at the rafters of other buildings this season and wanted to earn more than just the one ”Western Conference Champions 2016-17” banner that currently hangs in Bridgestone Arena. They accomplished that in Washington thanks to two goals from Craig Smith, a game-winner from Ryan Johansen and 29 saves from backup goaltender Juuse Saros, setting a franchise record with 52 wins in the process.”It’s always just been about home ice and trying to stay in our building, give ourselves the best chance to be successful in the playoffs ,” coach Peter Laviolette said. ”With that, those things happen. You end up winning a division, a conference and first place in the league.”David Poile, who has been general manager since the franchise’s inception, shook hands and congratulated each player as he walked out of the locker room. While Laviolette and his staff watched the end of the Bruins-Panthers game in the coaches’ office and players took it in on hockey operations manager Brandon Walker’s phone, Poile watched alone from the concourse on one of the prouder nights in Predators history.”We all have goals. That was part of it,” Poile said. ”It feels real good. When we get to a week from now and we start the playoffs, we’ll be moving on to something else, but I’m very proud of our franchise. This is the first time we’ve done it and it means a lot and I’m proud of everybody, all the effort that was put in all year.”It was almost poetic that the Predators won the Presidents’ Trophy by beating the Capitals, who won it the past two seasons and three times since 2010.Days after the five-year anniversary of his now-infamous trade from Washington to Nashville, star winger Filip Forsberg remarked: ”We’ve seen especially here (in Washington) that the trophy doesn’t mean that much going forward. But I think just the home ice is going to be huge.”The Metropolitan Division-champion Capitals New York Islanders T-Shirts Authentic , who have home ice through at least the first two rounds, got two goals from Evgeny Kuznetsov, Alex Ovechkin’s league-leading 47th of the season and 25 saves from Philipp Grubauer in the loss.Washington could still face New Jersey, Philadelphia, Columbus or back-to-back defending Cup-champion Pittsburgh in the first round.”I like the way we’re playing,” said coach Barry Trotz, who was in Nashville for that franchise’s first 15 seasons and has Washington in the playoffs for the fourth time in four years. ”We’re playing with lots of speed, we’re playing with lots of pace, and that was a good test.”The Predators know there are more tests upcoming, this time as the Cup favorite that won’t fly under the radar. But after going 9-2 at home on their run to the final a year ago, they assured themselves of more playoff hockey in Music City than on the road.”We learned what it was like to play at home in the playoffs,” defenseman Ryan Ellis said. ”To have the home ice is huge for our team.”NOTES: Smith’s two goals gave him a career-high 25. … Johansen scored the go-ahead goal with 5:27 left. … Kuznetsov has seven goals and 11 assists in his past 10 games. … Capitals F Alex Chiasson left the game with an illness. … Ovechkin was honored before the game for playing in 1 New York Islanders Hoodies Authentic ,000 NHL regular-season games. All he wanted to do was talk about earning two points. That’s the No. 1 figure on his mind.”I’m playing for the guys in here. Our goal is to make the playoffs,” Kopitar said . ”That’s all it comes down to.”Still, it was a pretty special evening for the Los Angeles captain.Kopitar became the first Kings player with a four-goal game since 1993, Jonathan Quick stopped 29 shots and LA picked up another valuable road win by cruising past the Colorado Avalanche 7-1 on Thursday night.Kopitar was so efficient that he picked up his fourth career hat trick with 7:33 remaining in the second period. He added another goal early in the third. This was the first four-goal game by a Kings player since Luc Robitaille accomplished the feat on Nov. 25, 1993, at Quebec.”He’s elite. Varlamov has appeared in 19 straight games (17 starts) with Bernier sidelined by a concussion. Bernier returned Thursday and allowed two goals. It’s the third time this season the Avs have allowed seven goals.Trailing 3-1, Nathan MacKinnon clanged one off the crossbar seconds into the second period. Moments later, Rieder found himself on a breakaway and beat Varlamov with a wrist shot. That pretty much wrapped things up. About the only drama was Kopitar’s hat-trick quest. He recorded his first hat trick since Feb. 12, 2016, with a backhander in the second period. Some of the fans at the Pepsi Center littered the ice with hats. He wasn’t done there, though, scoring his fourth on a breakaway.”I just felt all night that the puck was kind of following me around Custom New York Islanders Jerseys ,” Kopitar said. ”It worked out for me tonight.”At 30, Kopitar’s turning in his best statistical season with 86 points.”We’re all happy for him,” Thompson said. ”He’s usually the guy that’s dishing the puck, a pass-first kind of guy. He can score goals, too, apparently. It was a pleasure to watch.”Colorado took a 1-0 lead 3:33 into the game when Gabriel Landeskog kicked a sliding puck over to Rantanen, who rocketed it into the net. The advantage lasted all of 55 seconds.MacKinnon had an assist to extend his point streak to a career-best 14 games. Our defense is playing great and we’re getting timely saves at the right time and we’re scoring and we’re going to the net and doing the little things that make this team a good hockey team.”Binnington has started all five games during the streak and improved to 9-1-1 in his NHL career.“He’s playing great,” Blues interim coach Craig Berube said. “Every night he gives us a chance to win. I’ve said that a number of times but that is the truth. He’s aggressive and challenges and he’s standing tall.”Pekka Rinne stopped 30 of 33 shots for Nashville, which had won five of six. The teams meet again Sunday in Nashville.“Pekka kept us in that game, but our first 40 minutes were just not good enough,” Predators center Ryan Johansen said. “The good thing is we are right back at it tomorrow against the same team, and the work we brought in the third period is what we need tomorrow for the whole game.”Dunn scored his seventh goal of the season 2½ minutes after Maroon’s tilt with McLeod when he roofed a rebound over Rinne 4:37 into the game.Tarasenko gave St. Louis a 2-0 lead when he one-timed a pass from Brayden Schenn past Rinne with 1:15 left in the first. Tarasenko has registered a point (four goals , five assists) in seven consecutive games.Mattias Ekholm scored his seventh goal of the season on a power play when his shot bounced off Binnington’s glove to cut the St. Louis lead to 2-1. It was just Nashville’s second power-play goal in its last twelve games.MacEachern answered with his second career goal when he poked a rebound past Rinne to restore St. Louis’ two-goal lead.“The guys seem to have some confidence when the opposing team scores,” MacEachern said. “I think it kind of fires us up a bit and we kind of go out there and respond, which is huge.”With Rinne pulled for an extra attacker late in the third, Nashville pulled within one when Johansen swatted Filip Forsberg’s rebound out of the air for his 11th goal of the season.NOTESTarasenko has 26 points (11 goals, 15 assists) in 30 games against Nashville since 2012-2013, tying Dallas’ Jamie Benn for second-most by an opposing player in that span. … St. Louis has outshot its opponent in 19 straight games. … Nashville has dropped two straight to St. Louis after winning five in a row dating to last season.UP NEXTThe teams head to Nashville for the second game of their back-to-back on Sunday. PITTSBURGH (AP) — The arrival of 19-year-old Elias Pettersson has provided Vancouver with a much needed jolt. Yet the Canucks believe they’re far more than their fresh-faced rookie.Going toe-to-toe with Pittsburgh near the end of a draining road trip offered proof they might be right.Brock Boeser fired a wrist shot by Casey DeSmith’s stick and into the net 34 seconds into overtime to lift Vancouver to a 3-2 victory over the Penguins on Tuesday night.Pettersson sat out with a concussion after taking a hit in Florida on Saturday night. The Canucks won their third consecutive game anyway, riding a defense that kept the Penguins and star Sidney Crosby in check.“It’s obviously tough when you go on the road, especially early in the year,” Boeser said. “To get the points that we have, it’s nice.”The Penguins tied it late in regulation when Carl Hagelin took a perfect pass from Phil Kessel and slipped it past Anders Nilsson with 3:14 to go. Vancouver, however Brandon Saad Jersey , responded in the extra period.Boeser took the puck and drifted through center ice as the Canucks worked through a line change behind him. Rather than drop it off to a teammate, he let one go just inside the right circle for his second goal of the season.“I made a good read on the shot,” DeSmith said. “It just found a hole under my arm. Obviously one I want to have back. The guys played great tonight and they deserved better than that.”Ben Hutton and Brandon Sutter also scored for the Canucks. Nilsson finished with 26 saves for Vancouver, which played its fifth straight game on the road.“We had a real good team effort tonight,” Vancouver coach Travis Green said. “What a road game that was against a hockey team that’s obviously pretty deep. We’re learning how to win some hockey games and how we have to play to be successful.”Hagelin’s goal was his first of the season for Pittsburgh. Jake Guentzel continued his torrid start by picking up his fourth.DeSmith finished with 23 saves while making his third straight start in place of Matt Murray. Murray, Pittsburgh’s top goaltender, sustained a concussion last week and though he has been cleared to return spent a second consecutive game as DeSmith’s backup.“It was a tough game for a goalie,” Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said. “When you don’t score a lot of goals there’s not a lot of margin for error.”Guentzel scored on Pittsburgh’s first shot, taking the puck away from Vancouver’s Tim Schaller and starting a two-on-one with Sidney Crosby the other way. Rather than pass it to his teammate, Guentzel instead fired a wrister from the right circle that found its way between Nilsson’s right arm and his body to give the Penguins the lead 6:34 into the game.Hutton responded just over two minutes later, taking advantage of a scramble in front of the Pittsburgh net to swoop in from the blue line and fire a shot by the sprawled DeSmith to pick up his first goal since March 16 Brent Seabrook Jersey Kids , 2017.Sutter, who played for the Penguins from 2013-15 before signing with the Canucks, pushed Vancouver ahead with just 1:04 left in the first period, though Schaller did most of the hard work. Schaller worked behind the Pittsburgh net and then slipped the puck across the goal mouth. Sutter pounced and fired from a sharp angle just above the goal line. The goal appeared like it would be enough until late. Nilsson tamped down what little pressure the Penguins produced. It took an exquisite play from Kessel for Pittsburgh to draw even. Kessel, one of the best snipers in the NHL, raced down the right side but instead of shooting the puck instead opted to slip it across the ice to Hagelin, who redirected it into the net to help the Penguins salvage a point.“I think for the most part I think as far as scoring chances go we’ve had enough to win games,” said Crosby, who is still searching for his first goal of the season. “Tonight is another example. We generated good ones. You’re going to play games that are tight and you’ve got to take advantage of the ones you get.”NOTES: The Canucks did not go on the power play. how the Houston Texans turned around their season by winning six straight games after an 0-3 start and the hulking defensive end breaks into song."Started from the bottom now we're here Authentic Julien Davenport Jersey ," he bellows. "Started from the bottom now the whole team here."While the 2013 Drake tune is a little old to be the team's anthem, the sentiment of the song couldn't be more fitting for these Texans. They occupied the basement of the AFC South after opening the season with losses to New England, Tennessee and the New York Giants by a combined 13 points. After falling into such a big hole early, the Texans were written off by many as headed to a lost season.Everyone insists that such a defeatist sentiment never took hold within the team, with the struggles galvanizing them to get on track and prove the doubters wrong."Don't quit. Everyone keeps fighting. Everyone keeps believing," quarterback Deshaun Watson said. "Everyone keeps fighting to the very, very end. That is what we do. Regardless of the situation or the adversity, we are always going to keep fighting. That is how we feel."Houston is the second team in NFL history to win six in a row after opening 0-3, the first since the Giants in 1970. The winning streak has the Texans in first place in their division and in good position to compete for their third AFC South title in the last four seasons.A big reason for Houston's turnaround has been the play of Watson and defensive end J.J. Watt. Both have started each game this year after having their 2017 seasons cut short by major injuries. Watson tore a knee ligament in practice after appearing in seven games in 2017. Watt played just eight games in the previous two years because of back surgeries and a broken leg.Watt is tied for third in the NFL with nine sacks and his four forced fumbles are tied for most in the league."I know he probably doesn't want to talk about it too much, but I've never seen anything like it," coach Bill O'Brien said. "To come back from what he's been able to come back from, some really serious injuries, and to be able to play at the level that he's playing at, it just says all you need to know about him and how much he cares about the team and how much he wants to help this organization win."Watson Youth Bruce Ellington Jersey , the 12th overall pick in last year's draft, has thrown for 2,389 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions despite being slowed by lung and rib injuries. O'Brien said his diligence in coming to the facility every day after his injury last season to study film and talk to coaches has helped Watson take a step forward this year."He's grown a lot," O'Brien said. "He's just an awesome guy to work with. He cares about studying, he cares about putting time in to prepare for each game. I think he's learned a lot about NFL defenses. He's had a lot thrown at him defensively this year, whether it's third-down defenses, red-area defenses. He's improved every week."Watson has been helped by the stellar play of receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who is No. 3 in the NFL with 894 yards receiving and whose seven touchdowns are tied for second. The Texans hope that new addition Demaryius Thomas, acquired in a trade with Denver last Tuesday, will make more of an impact after the break with some time to learn the offense.Hopkins, who has five touchdowns in the last four games, said despite this strong stretch the Texans are approaching things the same way they did when they were desperate for a victory."We've got the same mentality, and that's win," he said. "That's why we go to practice and that's why we wake up every day. It's the same mentality we had when we were 0-3. Nothing's changed."They know that if they let up , their season will end prematurely, just as it did when they went 4-12 in 2017.O'Brien let out a slight chuckle when asked if 0-3 feels like forever ago."It's not a really long time ago," he said. "I think our players understand that, and I think the difference between 0-3 and where we are now is not a big difference. We're just making some more plays, we're coaching some things better. I think our guys have to 鈥?and they do 鈥?understand that every week is going to be difficult."First up is a trip to Washington on Nov. 18 before a Monday night matchup with Tennessee on Nov. 26 in the first of three straight home games when a win would be key in moving closer to taking their division."It's just important to note that we haven't been blowing anybody out," safety Tyrann Mathieu said. "I don't think we are a complacent group of guys. We've been in some fist fights, some real close ballgames, so it's not like everything is cookie cutter and everything is going all good for us.""We still have things we can improve on and work on, so I think that's what's going to keep us pushing forward." The Tennessee Titans were the first dog out of the gate, going up 10-0 thanks to a defensive pass interference penalty on Justin Reid and a dump-off to Jonnu Smith that became a 61 yard touchdown after Tyrann Mathieu turned and chased, leaving the center of the field open. Down, instead of up early, the Texans faced adversity for the first time in forever. They were forced to actually do something on offense. And that they did. Play-action was used to create easier passes. They hammered Lamar Miller on the left side of the line of scrimmage and flirted with 300 rushing yards, thanks to a 97 yard Lamar Miller touchdown run. Demaryius Thomas caught two touchdown passes D.J. Reader Jersey , thanks to UT solving the unsolved mystery. Watson tiptoed around the pocket and was sharp throughout the game. The Titans couldn’t do what Houston did. They fell behind and wallowed in it like they’ve done all season long. Rather than push the ball downfield and attack Houston’s cornerback talent, they instead dumped it off and dumped it off again. Marcus Mariota was a nice guy, taking sacks and refusing to throw the ball downfield in order to complete every pass except for one. When Tennessee did push it downfield, Corey Davis had three catches on three targets for 89 yards and a touchdown, all along the deep left sideline. That may not even be the most blasphemous part of Tennessee’s offense; they attempted to convert a 4th and 1 at the three-yard line by giving it to their third string tight end who came into the tackle straight up. What a stupid team. Somewhere, Mike Mularkey is howling. You never go kind of, sort of Exotic Methmouth. It’s like a tribal tattoo. It’s a lifestyle. It’s not something you can run away from. Again, always and forever this year, when the Texans play teams that have to run the ball, they win. When they play teams that can spread Houston out and throw it around, the Texans will probably lose. This was another game where the Texans shut down an offense that is not only run heavy but also terrible at running the ball. As a result, the Texans win. They’ve now won eight games in a row. They are now 8-3 and will play the Cleveland Browns next Sunday at 12 p.m. CST at NRG Stadium.

Peterman never lost faith in himself following the most difficult moment of his young NFL career. What's more important Youth Baker Mayfield Jersey , neither did Bills coach Sean McDermott. In 10 months, Peterman has gone from throwing five interceptions in the first half of his first career start, to being chosen Monday as Buffalo's season-opening starter. Though the job is his until rookie first-round pick Josh Allen is deemed ready, Peterman's ascension from being counted out to being counted on is a testament to the second-year player's perseverance."I believe he's a resilient young man. He's certainly come through some times of adversity throughout his career," McDermott said shortly the Bills announced Peterman would be their starter at Baltimore on Sunday. "Usually, if you go through some adversity early in life, you're that much more prepared for it when it comes around later."Peterman is aware of the critics he attracted following a 54-24 loss at the Los Angeles Chargers on Nov. 19 in which McDermott's decision to start him ahead of Tyrod Taylor backfired. And Peterman was grateful for the opportunity to prove himself during a three-way competition that was trimmed to two once AJ McCarron was traded to Oakland last weekend."It means a lot. I'm thankful for the people that stood by my side through hard times," Peterman said."When you have obstacles, hard things in your life, that doesn't mean you should quit," he added. "Maybe that's the way some people think, but that's not the way I think. For me, it just amps me up even more and gives me a lot of desire and drive to go accomplish those goals."McDermott based his decision on how the Peterman handled himself upon arriving at the team's facility in April, and his steady performance in three preseason appearances.Peterman put up the best passing numbers during the preseason, 33 of 41 for 432 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. In the meantime White Genard Avery Jersey , the start of the Allen era is on hold after the strong-armed but raw quarterback showed he requires more development.Allen went 24 of 44 for 210 yards and two touchdowns in three preseason appearances, and particularly struggled in a 26-13 loss to Cincinnati on Aug. 26 in his only preseason start. The 22-year old managed three first downs on seven-plus series while getting little protection from a patchwork offensive line and being sacked five times for 39 yards."As a competitor, you want to play," Allen said. "To not play, that's going to hurt anybody's feelings, but at the end of the day, it's football. We're part of the team. I can't say anything bad about the decision. Nate played well in the preseason. Now I'm here to help him in any way possible."The Bills traded up five spots to select the Wyoming product seventh overall — the highest draft position Buffalo has ever selected a quarterback.McDermott declined to get drawn into making comparisons between the two quarterbacks. He described Allen's development as being on schedule and said the rookie can learn plenty from watching regular-season games from the sideline."I expect Josh will be ready to go when his number's called, whenever it is called. And that's his focus now," McDermott said. The Bills are starting over at what's been an unsettled position since Hall of Famer Jim Kelly retired after the 1996 season. Peterman will become the 11th quarterback to start a season, including Matt Cassel, who took the first snap in 2015.Peterman has a track record of bouncing back from adversity. In his first college start at Tennessee, Peterman had a hand in four turnovers — two interceptions, a fumble while being sacked and a botched handoff — before being pulled during a 31-17 loss at Florida as a redshirt freshman in 2013.He then transferred to Pittsburgh following his sophomore year and excelled in his final two seasons. At Pitt, Peterman completed 378 of 619 attempts for 5,142 yards with 47 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 26 games Youth David Njoku Jersey , which led Buffalo to select him in the fifth round of the draft.Peterman doesn't look toward starting against Baltimore as a chance to ease the memories of what happened against Los Angeles."Every time I've gotten back on the field it's a new opportunity," he said. "You're not tied to your past failures."He's also not looking beyond this weekend, when reminded the Bills' home-opener is against the Chargers on Sept. 16."Yeah, that's two weeks away. And like I say, it's day to day," Peterman said. "It's about the Ravens."NOTES: McDermott said Ryan Groy has earned the starting spot at center. ... DT Kyle Williams (right knee) practiced, though he's not sure he'll be ready to play Sunday. ... The Bills filled out their 10-player practice squad by signing offensive lineman Ruben Holcomb and defensive tackle Robert Thomas. It’s Week 14 of the 2018 NFL season, and no AFC North team has yet to be mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. While some—the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers—have better chances than others—the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals—that doesn’t change the fact that the final weeks of the year are critical for all four members of the division. And in this critical time, critical developments have unfolded around the division. Here’s what Browns fans need to know about the AFC North for this week.Pittsburgh SteelersSteelers running back James Conner will miss at least Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders, having suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 13 that head coach Mike Tomlin conceded “is probably a little more significant than we initially thought.” This means that the Steelers will be taking a running back by committee approach in the interim.Behind the Steel Curtain’s Jeff Hartman thinks this is a good thing; rookie Jaylen Samuels doesn’t have the every-down skill set to take on a prominent role on his own, which means he will be splitting work with veteran Stevan Ridley for the time being.Meanwhile, Shannon White wonders what the Steelers will do with cornerback Artie Burns. The 2016 Round 1 draft pick has found his way to the bench this season after proving to be a serious liability in coverage. White writes, “Artie needs a moment, and soon,” and she’s not wrong. Burns has one season left on his rookie deal and doesn’t seem on pace for Pittsburgh to exercise their fifth-year option to keep him on the roster.Cincinnati BengalsWhile the Bengals are still technically in the playoff picture , with a 5-7 record, getting to the postseason is becoming an ever-increasing long shot. First, quarterback Andy Dalton was placed on injured reserve with a thumb injury, and now his backup, Jeff Driskel, won’t have the services of the team’s best receiver to help him close out the year.A.J. Green was placed on injured reserve this week after tearing ligaments in his toe. The injury will require surgery, reports Cincy Jungle’s Jason Marcum. Green will be sidelined for up to four months but should be ready for 2019’s OTA sessions. The wideout had been playing through issues with the toe and missed three games this season because of the injury.Marcum also reports that ESPN’s Josina Anderson spoke with a Bengals source that head coach Marvin Lewis won’t be returning to the post after the 2018 season wraps. Though this has been a common refrain out of the Bengals in recent years, it may prove true this time. Will that lead to Hue Jackson taking over the reins? Bovada, as of now, is leaning towards Lewis sticking around—but just slightly.Baltimore RavensThe Ravens are riding a three-game win streak ahead of Sunday’s game against the formidable Kansas City Chiefs, currently positioning themselves for a Wild Card playoff berth. Frank J. Platko dives into the past three weeks’ successes and breaks it down by the numbers, which includes an impressive 265 rushing yards for rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson.Perhaps not coincidentally, Baltimore’s win streak coincides with Jackson taking over for an injured Joe Flacco. But Kyle J. Andrews—and Jackson himself—knows that Sunday’s meeting with the Chiefs will be the rookie passer’s biggest test of the season. It’s not Kansas City’s defense that’s the issue (it ranks 27th in points and 31st in yards allowed) but rather his ability to match the Chiefs’ league-leading scoring offense. NFL Outlet

after he and his baggage were jettisoned to the Patriots , the Browns need another dynamic playmaker to stretch the field.Antonio Callaway had better be ready."He ain't got no choice," Browns receiver Jarvis Landry said with a smile.Perhaps Cleveland's fastest player, Callaway is literally learning on the fly. The speedy 21-year-old, who had a checkered college career at Florida and would have been a first-round pick if not for non-football issues, is expected to have an expanded role going forward for the Browns (0-1-1).This is Callaway's latest chance, and he's planning to make the most it."It's the National Football League," he said following a walk-through as the Browns prepared for Thursday night's game against the New York Jets. "So I've got to step up."Callaway did just that last Sunday in New Orleans while filling in for Gordon, who was left home after he betrayed Cleveland's trust for the last time. Callaway made three catches for 81 yards and scored his first pro touchdown when he hauled in Tyrod Taylor's soaring 47-yard pass with 1:16 remaining. On fourth-and-5, Browns offensive coordinator Todd Haley and Taylor rolled the dice with the daring, deep pass that looked for a moment to be overthrown."I thought he was throwing it to me and I was like, 'Damn, this is too far,'" said Landry, who was running a pattern down the middle of the field to Callaway's left. "And then I peeked outside and I saw Callaway. And then I saw him put his head down and dig again, and he made the catch. That was definitely another gear."Browns coach Hue Jackson said he's watched at least five replays of Callaway's sprint and fingertip grab."When he threw it, I thought, 'Oh my,'" Jackson said. "I did not think we could get to it to be honest with you. All of a sudden, I see this guy go vroom and he runs right under the ball. What a play."Callaway may have to make more big plays if the Browns intend to end their 19-game winless streak dating to 2016. He was always in the team's plans for his first season, but Gordon's departure has accelerated everything for a player who at times has run too fast off the field. While at Florida, Callaway struggled to stay out of trouble. He was investigated on a sexual assault charge that was later dropped , got cited for misdemeanor possession of marijuana charge and then was dropped from the Gators team for his involvement in a credit card scheme.Callaway failed a drug test when he provided a diluted sample at the NFL Combine in February, further damaging his chances to be drafted early.Still, the Browns felt comfortable enough to select him with the No. 105 overall pick, and they had no reason to second-guess their decision until Callaway was ticketed for driving on a suspended license and police found a small amount of marijuana and gun parts in his car during a traffic stop in August. But Callaway has been on the straight and narrow since, and Jackson has been pleased with his progress."He's making strides," Jackson said. "We were not trying got push him too fast, not give him too much, too fast. Now, he has to take it all. It's time. I think that he will do well. He has always competed hard, and he always works at it. It is another step for him. This Thursday night will be good for him."So was the TD catch on a perfectly thrown ball by Taylor, a play that became a footnote in another painful loss for the Browns.Landry, though, said it can change Callaway."It does everything," he said. "It does a lot, obviously, for the guys around him, but it does a lot for the coaches and it does a lot for 5 (Taylor). And that's something as an offense we need, so it's awesome."NOTES: Starting DE Emmanuel Ogbah will miss his second game Thursday with a sprained left ankle. ... RB Duke Johnson has just 11 touches in two games, and Jackson said that's not nearly enough for one of the team's best offensive players. "Duke is a tremendous player," Jackson said. "We have got to put him in position to make an impact, because he can. We will continue to look at different ways of getting him involved Kevin Zeitler Jersey , but we will. We will get Duke going." ... New rookie K Greg Joseph was still meeting teammates after being signed Monday following a tryout. The Browns cut Zane Gonzalez after he missed four kicks in Sunday's loss. If he stays around, Joseph, who played at Florida Atlantic, could be kicking in frigid conditions in Cleveland. He faced some inclement weather in college at Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. "I don't know the temperature, but there wasn't any palm trees and the sun wasn't shining," he said.Corey Coleman trade seems like a blunder by John Dorsey New general manager John Dorsey has already shed another Cleveland Browns first-rounder in a move that probably surprised no one who’s been paying attention. The Browns now miserably have none of their first rounders from 2009 to 2016 despite making 11 selections in those eight drafts. Baker Mayfield, Denzel Ward, Myles Garrett, Jabrill Peppers and David Njoku are the only drafted first-rounders left on their roster.Corey Coleman trade rumors were a big fuss leading up to last April’s NFL draft. After back-to-back injury-riddled seasons to begin his career, Coleman was heading into his junior season with a lot to prove to a lot of people. The team addressed the position by welcoming back Josh Gordon—they thought—trading for then extending Jarvis Landry, then drafting Antonio Callaway and Damion Ratley. The receiver room was obviously getting crowded, so Coleman could always have been pegged as the odd man out. While Coleman’s selection with the No. 15 pick by former team personnel chief Sashi Brown may have been somewhat puzzling at the time, Dorsey shipping him off just 10 days into 2018’s training camp, for what we assume is a future day three draft pick (update: a 7th round pick in 2020), is a somewhat equally questionable move. The Browns do have some talent at wide receiver, so from a football perspective moving on from Coleman isn’t the end of the world. Gordon is due back at any time and Duke Johnson should play a role from the slot in certain spots—although the Browns abandoned that largely last season after experimenting with it early in the year—but moving Coleman also represents a detour from the team’s mantra of driving competition at every position group. Coleman was feeling the pressure to compete, and he had strung together a series of pretty positive practices over the last week or so in response to that competition. He was grinding and making it hard for other guys to take his place, maybe to Dorsey’s dismay. After all, Dorsey and most new general managers want to insert their guys, and Callaway—who has looked incredible as well, by the way—is his guy Authentic JC Tretter Jersey , not Coleman.Moving him now seems to make little sense from a competitive standpoint, especially for what we believe Dorsey was able to secure in return for him—a 7th-round pick in 2020.There are, then, only two possible explanations for the trade that will make this decision make sense: either Coleman was a terrible locker room guy—a bad teammate with a bad work ethic, which some have mused to be true—or he is damaged goods, and teams knew both to be true.If neither are correct, then Dorsey moving him at his lowest possible value is a bad, maybe even horrible personnel blunder. If neither are true, then why not allow Coleman to showcase some of his talent that he has flashed in training camp in Cleveland’s upcoming preseason games to potentially increase his value, resulting in a bigger return? After all, teams are going to get desperate eventually. Receivers will get hurt. Guys will not pan out as teams originally anticipated. Some team in any number of scenarios may have offered more draft equity down the line, or maybe a player in exchange after seeing him in action. So if he wasn’t a complete clown as a teammate, and wasn’t damaged goods, there’s no way this trade can be labeled a success. Every move Dorsey makes isn’t going to be a home run, and there are probably some more under-the-surface details we’re missing, but being critical here seems like a rational approach. While it makes sense from a football perspective, from a value standpoint it leaves us wondering if Dorsey could have done a better job in securing a better return for his inherited former first-round pick. Marcus Mariota Interception from 2017: Introduction The Tennessee Titans struggled on the offensive side of the ball for the majority of 2017 , finishing 23rd in the NFL in total yards and 19th in average points per game. The Titans were one of only two playoff teams to finish outside the top 12 of all teams in both of those categories (the other being the Buffalo Bills). The Bills determined the reason for their offensive struggles was at the quarterback position, and in the offseason they traded away Tyrod Taylor and selected polarizing prospect Josh Allen in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Titans came to a different conclusion concerning their subpar offensive output, choosing to part ways with head coach Mike Mularkey and his staff after the statistical regression endured by franchise quarterback Marcus Mariota.Judging solely by the statistics, Mariota had a poor season. He threw a career-low 13 touchdown passes and a career-high 15 interceptions in the regular season, despite throwing only 14 passes that Pro Football Focus deemed “turnover-worthy”. Including two postseason games, Mariota totaled 16 interceptions on the year. His yards per attempt and passer rating both hit career-lows, as well, with 7.14 and 79.3, respectively.Statistics can often be misleading if they are not accompanied by proper context, so this new series of articles will attempt to apply context to one particularly glaring stat: those 16 interceptions. While Mariota’s third season saw improvement in a few areas of his game, including a decreased fumble rate Jayon Brown Jersey , improved deep ball accuracy, and efficiency with play-action passing, he also failed at times to properly set his feet and to correctly diagnose defensive coverages. Some of Mariota’s struggles could be explained by him trying to do “too much,” often bypassing an open check-down option to try and fit the ball into a tight window downfield in an effort to make a big play for the team. Other struggles were purely mechanical, perhaps a product of an offseason spent rehabbing rather than perfecting his craft. And a handful of his intercepted passes were the result of poor play from his teammates.Overall, Mariota could’ve (and should’ve) avoided many of the turnovers he committed last season. Before we get into the play-by-play breakdowns of each interception, let’s see if we can find some patterns in Mariota’s struggles. His 16 interceptions came on (in order) targeted depths of approximately 10 yards, 20 yards, 24 yards, 5 yards, 24 yards Authentic Josh Kline Jersey , 9 yards, 12 yards, 5 yards, 15 yards, 6 yards, 16 yards, 23 yards, 20 yards, 17 yards, 20 yards, and finally Youth Logan Ryan Jersey , 17 yards. His average depth of target on interceptions was 15.2 yards downfield. Now for some interesting tables breaking down where the interceptions came from...By Game SituationGame SituationINTs ThrownGame SituationINTs ThrownBy PersonnelGroupingINTs ThrownGroupingINTs ThrownBy FormationFormationINTs ThrownFormationINTs ThrownBy Defensive LookDefensive LookINTs ThrownDefensive LookINTs ThrownBy Area of FieldArea of FieldINTs ThrownArea of FieldINTs ThrownBy TargetTargeted PlayerINTs ThrownTargeted PlayerINTs ThrownBy Route TargetedRouteINTs ThrownRouteINTs ThrownWhat deductions, if any, can be made from these numbers? One NFL season offers too small of a sample size to draw any definitive conclusions. Assessments like “Mariota is bad out of shotgun” or “Mariota is bad without play-action” are extremely fallacious and as ridiculous as concluding that Rishard Matthews is worse than Harry Douglas because Mariota threw 4 more INTs when targeting Matthews. There are far too many factors at play that are not expressed in the above numbers and not enough data presented overall to form any real ideas. That said, the numbers do somewhat support the idea that Mariota may have been pressing to make a big play, as 12 of his 16 picks came when tied or trailing. It is also encouraging to note that these numbers don’t indicate worrisome struggles against a specific coverage (nearly even in interceptions against man or zone coverage) or to any area of the field. Regardless, while it is interesting to peruse the above statistical splits, we’ll have to analyze the tape before we can form any real opinions about the root problem(s) behind Mariota’s interceptions. The following suite of articles will attempt to determine where Mariota struggled most on these intercepted passes and how deserving of blame he alone is for those turnovers. This analysis will also live on Twitter, but the written articles will provide much more detail than the tweets. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the large group of people who helped me breakdown and diagnose these plays and concepts, including a special thanks to MCM’s Mike Herndon and Super Horn.DISCLAIMERS: I’ll be attempting to diagram the various offensive and defensive concepts ran by the Titans and their opponents for each of these 16 plays, but of course I can only guess at the actual playcalls. These diagrams will be based on how the play developed. Many modern defensive concepts are fluid and determined by what the offensive players are doing on the fly after the ball is snapped. At the same time, many offensive routes are determined mid-play by the opposing coverage. I’ll also be guessing at routes that appear to be option routes Cheap Dion Lewis Jersey , but obviously I can’t know the full extent of the options and how many routes were actually option routes without access to the playbook and each of the playcalls. The analysis will be presented chronologically in the order that the interceptions were thrown, and thus the articles are meant to be read in that order. I’ll be referencing previous posts and plays as we move through the breakdowns. And finally, be warned: this series will not paint Mariota in the brightest of lights. Quite the opposite, in fact. These articles will illuminate his struggles. Fear not, Titans fans. There is more than enough reason to be optimistic about Mariota’s future as the face of the franchise; he is certainly among the best young players at his position in the NFL. However, it’s important to analyze and critique him objectively. The young signal-caller is still far from perfect at this early stage of his career.Click here for the first of 16 individual breakdowns. Two things are as American as they come: Gridiron Football, and snacks. You can go to a ballgame and munch on your favorite snacks as you watch your team suck or or straight up dominate an opponent. And regardless of how expensive the concessions are, we all love to snack. So whether you’re snacking at home or you’re at the ballgame, what is your go-to snack(s) when watching a Titans game, or any game in general? For me, my go to snack when I’m watching a game at home is Goldfish. Honestly Brian Orakpo Jersey , what can you do better than munch on the snack that smiles back? At the ballgame(this is a cop-out) I enjoy popcorn, which is obvious. My go-to drink is Dr. Pepper for some reason. I understand it tastes like a watered down Coke, but I still enjoy it.Really, what I should do is try to snack on gummy bears. Those don’t make much of a mess and they’re delicious too. Goldfish, on the other hand, leave the mess that doesn’t smile back, so that’s not fun. Anyway, Goldfish is my snack when I’m watching games from home, though really any brand of chips does just fine as well. Now let’s hear your go-to snacks in the comment section below!

at 3 pm CST. I do not think the Titans will do anything Youth Rashaan Evans Jersey , but I certainly think they should. A trade would boost the team, and a trade for either a TE or WR would be most needed. Golden Tate is rumored to be had for a 4th rounder. Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders would both be upgrades. Pierre Garcon would be an upgrade. Devante Parker would be an upgrade. Heck, the only guys who wouldn’t be an upgrade are Nick Williams and Kelvin Benjamin. Jon Robinson discusses the big month ahead for the Titans. I would categorize Monday night as a must win. Overall the Titans probably need 3 of 4 to stay in the playoff race. Mike Vrabel says he doesn’t do trades, so don’t ask him about them. That’s JRob’s gig. The Titans did add FB Jalston Fowler , who should help the Titans block, and improve the run game. I’m fine with the move, I just hope they augment the team in other ways too. Mike Gundy is awesome and hates twitter so much he makes fart noises about it. Titans General Manager Jon Robinson discussed the team’s decision to release wide receiver Rishard Matthews on Thursday and said that the team first tried to trade the veteran before simply dropping him from the roster.Matthews went public with his desire to move on from Tennessee on Wednesday and Robinson said that he spoke to several teams about a trade, but the “market never really manifested itself” in a way that would result in a trade. As a result Youth Austin Johnson Jersey , they moved to release him on Thursday.Matthews said he felt the team used injuries as a “scapegoat” for a reduced role in the offense, but Robinson said he thought that Matthews was coming back toward “what we have seen from him the last couple of years.”鈥淚 think that Rishard could help this team,鈥?Robinson said, via the team’s website. 鈥淎gain Authentic Logan Ryan Jersey , I told him that several times. He felt differently. He felt like he needed to move on, and that鈥檚 what we鈥檝e done.鈥漅obinson said the team would consider adding to a receiver group that’s now made up of five players, but he expects their roster to stay at 52 players through this weekend’s game against the Eagles.
